Washington, DC"The National Hydropower Association applauds the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on their agreement to enhance cooperation on the hydropower permitting process.Making the regulatory process more efficient is one of several crucial policy changes that will enable the expansion of hydropower capacity. With the right policies, the industry could add 60,000 MW of capacity by 2025, growth accompanied by the creation of 1.4 million cumulative jobs, studies have found.

Hydropower developments undergo a comprehensive regulatory approval process that involves many participants. The system strives to promote development while protecting natural resources, but it can also contain redundancies and inefficiencies that unnecessarily slow deployment. Improving this process is vitally important at a time when there is universal agreement about the need to expand our supplies of domestic, clean electricity.

The March 30, 2011 Memorandum of Understanding signed by FERC and USACE is an important step forward, but work remains to be done. We stand ready to work with policymakers and regulators to enact further improvements needed to create more jobs and more clean and domestic energy through expanded hydropower deployment.”
