18Retorica politica si-a schimbat accentul de pe nevoia de a reactiona la „provocarea generationala" a schimbarilor climatice. Investitiile in tehnologii energetice alternative, cum ar fi cele eoliene sau solare, nu mai sunt fundamentate pe argumente ecologice. Ni se vorbeste, in schimb, despre pretinsele beneficii economice, cu precadere despre promisiunea asa-numitelor „joburi verzi". Din nefericire, in realitatea economica, promisiunile nu stau in picioare.
Centrul Consensus de la Copenhaga i-a solicitat lui Gürcan Gülen, senior economist in probleme de energie de la Centrul pentru economia energiei din cadrul Biroului de geologie economica de la Universitatea Texas din Austin, sa evalueze „situatia stiintifica" in privinta definirii, masurarii si prognozelor de creare a slujbelor verzi. Gülen a descoperit ca aparitia de noi locuri de munca „nu poate fi sustinuta ca un alt beneficiu" al politicilor verzi bine intentionate. De fapt, numarul de joburi pe care aceste politici le creeaza va fi probabil contrabalansat - daca nu mai rau - de numarul de locuri de munca pe care le distrug.
